I’ve mentioned this a few times on Twitter, but Josh Thole is woodshedding a new bat with an angled-knob meant to protect players from hamate-bone injuries. I have no idea how it would help Thole, who chokes up on the bat and so doesn’t hold the knob anyway, but here’s what it looks like. It’s the one that isn’t shaped like the others.
The bat is designed to give players quicker hands, stronger swings, better plate coverage and reduced incidence of injury. Hessman used it on Sunday and hit a double to left center.
Prince Fielder use one in a game five days later in Milwaukee. Corey Hart has a few as well but has not used them in a game yet – getting used to the new feel.
